If there is a problem with a new version of Firefox, some people may want to downgrade Firefox to a previous version but we do not recommend this. The latest Firefox version includes security updates so downgrading to an older version leaves you more vulnerable to attacks and usually doesn't fix the problem. This article gives you some alternatives to downgrading and links to older versions of Firefox if you do choose to downgrade.

Problems with an update are usually not caused by the new version of Firefox, but rather the update process. In most cases, installing a previous version will not help. Instead, see:

Note: Other problems can be solved with the Refresh Firefox feature. It restores Firefox to its default state while saving your essential information.

Ensure all security and security-related software is fully updated. Some security software will need to be upgraded to a new version so that it is compatible with each Firefox version update.

Optional software bundled with security software also may need updating. Such software may not be essential for your security but, if outdated, may interfere with the use of Firefox or cause Firefox to crash.

Important: By default, Firefox is set for automatic updates. To prevent Firefox from automatically updating itself after you install an older version, you'll need to change your Firefox update settings: In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click Firefox and select Preferences.Click the menu button and select ... In the General panel, go to the Firefox Updates section.

Instead of downgrading to an older, insecure version of Firefox and changing your update settings, you should consider these alternatives:

Install Firefox Extended Support Release.Firefox Extended Support Release (ESR) is an official version of Firefox developed for large organizations such as universities and businesses. Firefox ESR does not come with the latest features, but it does have the latest security and stability fixes. Use the latest version of another browser. If you are not satisfied with the current Firefox version or it simply is not working right now, there are alternative browsers that you can use to browse the web.

Firefox automatically uses settings that work best with your computer. You can modify these settings in your Firefox OptionsPreferencesSettingsPreferences page. In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click Firefox and select Preferences.Click the menu button and select ... In the General panel, go down to the Performance section and uncheck the box next to Use recommended performance settings. You will then be able to change the following settings:

Use hardware acceleration when available: This setting allows Firefox to use your computer's graphics processor, if possible, instead of the main processor, to display graphics-heavy web content such as videos or games. This frees up resources on your computer so it can run other applications, like Firefox, faster. This box is checked by default but the feature isn't available for all graphics processors. You must restart Firefox after changing this setting, before it will take effect.

Content process limit: With Multiprocess Firefox, also called electrolysis or e10s , Firefox runs web content for all tabs separately from the main Firefox process for increased security and performance. Using multiple content processes can further increase performance and minimize the impact of content process crashes. You can modify this setting to increase or decrease the content process limit.

The recommended maximum is four but you can set up to seveneight content processes; however, having too many content processes can slow down your computer, and consequently, Firefox.You can set between one and eight content processes. The default is eight. Having more content processes can improve performance when using multiple tabs but it will also use more memory. You can reduce the number of content processes if your computer is running out of memory.

Tip:If your computer's system informationIf the information about your Mac shows more than 8 GB of RAM, you might want to try bumping up the number of content processes that Firefox uses from its default value as you would likely benefit from a high content process limit.
