Volume not re-mountable.

This can happen when the USB stick is not cleanly unmounted from the Windows PC. If you simply unplug the USB stick from PC without using the little tray icon to detach the hardware correctly, the volume will be marked as 'not cleanly unmounted'. There might be some dirty sectors left and macOS will not be able to re-mount in read-write mode for that reason.

This is usually happen when not all files are written properly due to an unmount operation not finishing. The NTFS partition might be marked as 'dirty' and the Apple NTFS driver cannot recover from that situation. Mounty will not delete anything by itself, please try to restore your files on a Windows PC using usual recovery softwares, i.e. chkdsk command line utility.

Sometimes the files are grayed out and cannot be modified anymore.

This is because the file has extended attributes, refer to the Manpage of xattr for further explanation. If you try to mount a Windows System partition, Mounty might fail when Hibernation feature is enabled. There is a Fast Start feature in Windows which might be enabled by default, and this is causing the drive to be locked. Within Windows running, you need to run the command powercfg /hibernate off in an admin powershell and restart Windows to disable this feature and remove the lock to enable it for Mounty.

By default, macOS Catalina can open and read the NTFD drives or partitions without problems. We can copy and open the files from it. But, we cannot write to the NTFS drives or partitions. Well, it is sad but true. We need to install third-party software in order to write to the NTFS partitions. But don’t worry, it is very easy and there is a bunch of software that capable and available for free. Here is some recommended software to enable the write access to NTFS drives on macOS.

A. iBoysoft NTFS for Mac

iBoysoft NTFS for Mac is a menu-bar utility that can be installed on Mac running OS X 10.8 to macOS 10.15. The software will automatically mount Windows NTFS-formatted external disks and Windows BOOTCAMP partition in read-write mode. Users will have full read and write access to NTFS drives on Mac to view, edit, delete, rename, and convert the Windows files.

Mounty app will automatically detects your NTFS drives or partitions. If there is a new NTFS device connected, this program will give us a notification. We can then remount the drive in read-write mode.

C. Hasleo NTFS for Mac

Hasleo NTFS for Mac is pretty similar to the Mounty App. This program will put an icon in the upper taskbar. You can easily mount, open or eject the NTFS drive from there. Hasleo NTFS will automatically detects any NTFS drives or partitions connected to your Mac. You can also set the program to run at login.
